She was married to Beverly who was a housewife, and Thad an officer in the US Navy. She is also the mother of three siblings and a brother. Her father was a diplomat and family members moved often. They lived in a variety of countries across the globe which included Germany, Japan, Greece, and Germany. After settling in Maryland, Harden went to Surrattsville High School in Clinton. She went on to the University of Texas at Austin in the fall of 1980, and earned a bachelor's in theater during the year. Harden was accepted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1988 for the purpose of obtaining her MFA.
